Para-transit Van, Volunteer driver and Mileage Reimbursement Services
The KV Van transportation program offers door-to-door van and volunteer driver services to passengers who are eligible under specific social service organization guidelines. KV Van provides door-to-door transportation service to elderly and/or disabled passengers and low income citizens throughout Kennebec and Somerset Counties.
KV Van operates a fleet of 18 accessible paratransit vans and buses whose professional drivers are well trained in the use of specialized passenger assistance techniques and adaptive equipment.
In addition to this fleet of Agency owned vehicles, KV Van uses an outstanding corps of over 100 volunteer drivers to transport individual passengers. Among other services, these volunteers provide customized transportation services to special needs children and children under protective custody of the State of Maine. Volunteers transporting children receive comprehensive training to help them deal with the unusual challenges of transporting these special children. While volunteers are essential to the program, maintaining the numbers of volunteers needed to meet travel demands is a constant challenge. Volunteers provided KVCAP referred passengers with over 2 million miles of service during the past year.
Common destinations for passengers using KV Van services are:
- Doctors Offices
- Hospitals
- Adult Day Care Programs
- Developmental Workshops
- Behavioral Health Facilities
- Other Medical & Developmental Services
These services are available to eligible clients who have completed an application for services and have scheduled their rides at least three days in advance.
Funding for these services is provided by MaineCare, DHHS, United Way and other community service programs. Private payment arrangements are available for service to the general public. The KV Van Program transported more than 4,000 people over 2.9 million passenger miles last year.
